Sore Throat Q & A
What is causing my child’s sore throat?
A sore throat is a fairly common symptom of a viral infection or the common cold. This type of sore throat can usually be treated at home. However, if your child has a sore throat that persists (lasts longer than 48 hours), a pediatrician should see your child because he or she may have strep throat.
What is strep throat?
Strep throat is a bacterial infection that causes a sore throat. It is common in children and contagious, so if your child goes to school or daycare, you should keep an eye out for signs of strep throat in your child. They include:
- Throat pain, especially if it comes on quickly
- Painful swallowing
- Swollen tonsils; they may have white patches or streaks of pus
- Small red spots on the soft or hard palate (back of the roof of the mouth)
- Swollen and tender lymph nodes on the neck
- Vomiting or nausea
- Body aches
Symptoms vary, however, based on your child’s age. Strep throat can only be diagnosed by a doctor, so you should visit the pediatricians at MVP Pediatric & Urgent Care if you’re concerned that your child might be infected.
How can strep throat be treated?
Untreated strep throat can lead to more serious issues, so it’s important for your child to receive care from a pediatrician for strep throat. The pediatricians at MVP Pediatric & Urgent care begin by swabbing the back of the throat as part of a rapid strep test and throat culture. The sample is tested for the bacteria on-site by a pediatric nurse with a rapid test that takes about 5 minutes. If the rapid strep test is negative, we often send the throat culture to an outside lab in order to verify the results. The throat culture results will take a few days to return, if the rapid strep test is negative.
If your child tests positive for strep throat, he or she will be prescribed antibiotics to take care of the infection. Everything needed to diagnose and treat strep throat is available at MVP Pediatric & Urgent Care. You can also talk with the pediatricians and pediatric nurses about how to help your child feel better at home in the meantime.
You can get your child tested for strep throat immediately by visiting MVP Pediatric & Urgent Care. The sooner your child is tested, the sooner treatment can begin.
